An intact dog can produce two litters a year of 6-10 puppies per litter, which means in six years, one female dog and her offspring could produce 67,000 dogs. An average of 40,000 cats/dogs are euthanized in Colorado each year. Some rough statistics on shelters:
Out of eight to ten million animals that are in shelters annually, roughly 60% of those dogs are euthanized. Of the other 40% that are adopted out there are 20% of those returned for medical or behavioral problems.
